Cosmetic Surgery

In this picture, what first catches the eye is the terrified face on this woman. Her eyes are quite widened along with a wrinkled forehead showing her worries; also the placement of her mouth and tongue makes it seem as if she might be screaming in fear. The next thing that is noticed is the four syringes surrounding her face. These four syringes symbolize cosmetic surgery, which is growing more popular every year. Also, it is seen that everything around her is white- the background, her shirt, and the gloves -which white often symbolizes purity and innocence. The use of her terrified face along with the background color makes a viewer see that cosmetic surgery is bad. Also, with the use of white to symbolize innocence, it is implying that cosmetic surgery is becoming more popular with younger aged women. A few years ago it was not uncommon to see a woman in her late 30s or early 40s getting cosmetic surgery done to reduce wrinkles. Yet, these days, more women in their early 20s and even teen celebrities are getting these procedures done. Even though this picture does not symbolize the downside of cosmetic brain surgery, it still defends the point that any type of cosmetic surgery is not good. Cosmetic brain surgery is even worse, though, due to the area that is being operated on. If one contains this much fear due to surgery on their face, it is easy to imagine how much more fear one would have due to getting surgery done on their brain. While facial cosmetic surgery is slightly reversible, in the sense that if you get a nose job and are not happy with it they can go back in and fix it, brain surgery is totally irreversible. This key element is something else that would cause great fear in a patient. This picture develops pathos in a couple of ways. The hands holding the syringes have no faces, which makes one feel like they are part of this procedure and causing this young woman to suffer tremendously. Also, many people already fear syringes in the doctors’ offices, so seeing four of them coming towards one’s face makes it easier to sympathize for the great fear that comes from this procedure. Just the frightened face on the woman makes one relate and feel bad because everyone has that one thing that causes them to generate a large amount of fear. Any viewer can look at this picture and automatically feel the fear coming from her, no matter what audience this image is displayed for.
